Annecy Day Trip From Geneva

An Annecy day trip from Geneva: about an hour by coach or train, what to do in one day, market days, food, and a 5-hour trip from US$72 (October 2026).

Updated October 2026

Annecy is about an hour from Geneva by coach or by train, across the French border, which makes it the easiest day trip from Geneva and one you can do in half a day. Keytours’ From Geneva: Annecy - "Venice of the Alps" is five hours door to door, with free time in the old town and a 45-minute guided walk as an option, from US$72 a person (checked October 2026), rated 4.6 from 1,364 reviews.

How to get from Geneva to Annecy

By coach, about an hour: buses and low-cost coaches run from Geneva, including a line from the airport, and the tour coach leaves from Place Dorcière in the city centre. By train, about an hour to an hour and a half on the Léman Express, with roughly one train an hour; it does not stop at the airport, so start from Genève-Cornavin. By car, about 45 minutes in light traffic. Annecy is in France: carry a passport or an EU identity card, and pay in euros.

What to do in Annecy in one day

Start in the Vieille Ville, the old town, where canals run between pastel houses and flower boxes; the Palais de l’Isle, the old prison on its island in the canal, is the picture everyone takes. Walk up to the Château d’Annecy for the view over the roofs and the lake, then down Rue Sainte-Claire, the street of cafés, bakeries and shops. Finish on the lake shore. On the half-day trip you have about two hours of free time after the walk, and a guest this October found that enough for the old town, the lake front and a pastry; the château entry and a lake cruise are not included.

Market days and food

Annecy’s open-air markets fill the old town around Rue Sainte-Claire on Tuesday and Friday mornings, and some guides add Sunday; check on the day. The food is Savoyard: tartiflette, baked potatoes with lardons, onions and Reblochon cheese, fondue and raclette in the cold months, and lake fish such as Arctic char. The cheese shops sell Reblochon, Beaufort and Tomme de Savoie straight from Alpine producers.

Half a day or a full day?

Half a day is enough for the old town and the lake. If you want a cruise, the château museum and a long lunch, take the full day: Keytours’ Annecy and Geneva city tour adds a two-hour tour of Geneva on the way back. The best day trips guide compares Annecy with the mountain days.
