Where to go close to Geneva

The closest day out is Annecy, in France, about an hour south: canals, an old town and a clear lake, done comfortably in the five hours of Keytours’ Annecy half day. Annemasse, the French town on the border, is closer still, but most visitors only pass through it on the way to Annecy or Chamonix. Along the Swiss shore, Lausanne is about an hour away by train and Montreux about an hour and a quarter, with the Lavaux vineyards between them; the Montreux guide covers them.

Which day for which traveller

First visit, one day only: Chamonix. The Aiguille du Midi puts you face to face with Mont Blanc, and Swisstours’ day with the cable car and train included removes the need to buy anything in Chamonix. With a guide all day: Velema’s guided Chamonix day, rated 4.9, covered on the Chamonix day trip page. Families and food lovers: Gruyères, chocolate in the morning and cheese at lunch; see the Gruyères day. Snow in any season: Swisstours’ Glacier 3000 day, with the Peak Walk bridge between two summits. The Matterhorn: Zermatt, the longest day; see the Zermatt guide.

How many days to give Geneva

Two days cover Geneva itself: the old town and the cathedral, the lakefront and the Jet d’Eau, and the international quarter. Each day trip then needs a full day of its own, except Annecy, which leaves you the evening in Geneva. With four or five days, most visitors do the city, Chamonix and one of Annecy, Gruyères or Montreux.

Before you book

Chamonix and Annecy are in France: carry a passport or an EU identity card, and euros. The Aiguille du Midi cable car closes from 2 November to 18 December 2026 for maintenance (chamonix.com), so in that window choose Annecy, Gruyères or Montreux. Almost every day trip here refunds in full up to 24 hours before, so you can book once your dates are fixed and keep the flexibility.
