The Guide
What a Chamonix Day From Geneva Is Like, and Which One to Take
Every coach goes to the same valley. The difference is the guide, the cable car and how much of the day is planned.
A Chamonix day trip from Geneva takes you across the French border to the valley town under Mont Blanc, up the Aiguille du Midi cable car to 3,842 metres, and back the same evening. The one this page puts first has a guide with you all day: Velema’s From Geneva: Chamonix, Mont Blanc & Ice Cave Guided Day Tour, nine hours with a 30-minute summit tour at the top, free time in Chamonix and the Mer de Glace in the afternoon. It is from US$119 a person (checked October 2026) for the coach and the guide, with the cable car and the glacier train as options, and rated 4.9 out of 5 from 803 reviews.

What the day is like
The coach leaves Geneva in the morning and follows the Arve valley into France. In Chamonix you go straight up the Aiguille du Midi, a cable car that climbs at up to 12 metres a second, and at the top the guide takes the group round the terraces for half an hour: Mont Blanc in front of you, and the French, Italian and Swiss Alps around. Back in town there is a short walk to point out restaurants and shops, then at least an hour on your own for lunch. In the afternoon a cogwheel train climbs to the Mer de Glace, the great glacier above the valley, where a gondola and about 180 steps lead down to the ice caves, and the same steps back up.
Guests this October name their guide, Niels, again and again: for his knowledge of the region’s history and geology, for clear timings, and for the humour. Several say there was plenty of time for lunch and shopping.
Autumn 2026: what is closed
Check the date you pick. The listing says the ice cave is closed from 28 September to 18 December 2026, and the Aiguille du Midi cable car and the Montenvers train close from 2 November to 18 December; chamonix.com gives 2 November to 18 December for the cable car and 2 November to 4 December for the train. If you skip the train while the ice cave is shut, the listing offers half the ticket back. Before 2 November and from 19 December, the full day runs, and with the cable car open it is the guided Mont Blanc day to book.

Altitude, cold and the border
At 3,842 metres the air is thin and cold even in summer: one guest this October warned that light-headedness at altitude is real, and another wished they had worn warmer clothes. The guided day is not for children under three. Chamonix is in France, so carry a passport or an EU identity card, and pay in euros in town. The tour runs in all weather, and if the cable car or the train cannot run that day, the operator offers an alternative.
