Geneva or Zurich for Day Trips?
Is Geneva nicer than Zurich? As a day-trip base, Geneva wins for Mont Blanc, Annecy and the lake; Zurich for Lucerne and central Switzerland.
Neither city is nicer overall, but as a base for day trips they face different ways: Geneva for Mont Blanc, Annecy, the Lake Geneva riviera and Gruyères, and Zurich for Lucerne, the Rhine Falls and the middle of the Swiss Alps. The two cities are under three hours apart by direct train. From Geneva you can still reach the Bernese Oberland in a day: Keytours’ Geneva: Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald & Interlaken Panoramic tour does it on a glass-roofed coach, from US$133 a person (checked October 2026), rated 4.8 from 33 reviews.

What Geneva is close to
Geneva sits in the French-speaking west, at the tip of Lake Geneva and almost surrounded by France. That puts Chamonix and Mont Blanc about an hour and a half away and Annecy about an hour, both in France, with Lausanne, the Lavaux vineyards, Montreux, Chillon and Gruyères along or above the Swiss shore. Glacier 3000 is a day with Montreux on the way back, and Zermatt is a long 13-hour day. The best day trips guide compares them.
What Zurich is close to
Zurich is German-speaking and central. Lucerne, the Rhine Falls and the mountains around Lake Lucerne are short trips from it, and the Jungfrau region is nearer than from Geneva. day-trip-from-zurich.com covers the days out from Zurich in detail, from the Rhine Falls to Jungfraujoch.
Interlaken from either side
Interlaken, between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, is about where the two cities’ reach overlaps. From Geneva there is no direct train: you change at Bern, sometimes at Spiez too, and the fastest trips take about two and a half to two and three-quarter hours. The coach tour above takes about three and a half hours out and three back, with an hour each in Grindelwald under the Eiger and in Lauterbrunnen with its waterfalls, and three hours in Interlaken. It is a 14-hour day, and mountain trains are not included. Guests this summer call it well organised, with a small bus and time in all three places. Keytours’ Interlaken and Harder Kulm day adds the funicular to the Harder Kulm viewpoint instead.
Which to choose
If your trip is about Mont Blanc, France or the lake, base yourself in Geneva. If it is about Lucerne, the Jungfrau and central Switzerland, Zurich or Lucerne suits better. Many visitors do both, with the train between them, and spend two or three days in each.
