Geneva to Chamonix

Geneva to Chamonix: about 1 h 30 by coach, 3 hours or more by train with changes, or a day tour with the coach both ways from US$96 (October 2026).

Updated October 2026

The best way from Geneva to Chamonix is by road: about an hour and a half by coach, against three hours or more by train with at least two changes. There is no direct train. For a day trip, the simplest option is a return coach with the day in Chamonix on your own, which is what Swisstours’ From Geneva: Full-Day Trip to Chamonix and Mont-Blanc sells: about 75 minutes each way through the Arve valley, from US$96 a person (checked October 2026), rated 4.5 from 637 reviews.

By coach or bus

Geneva and Chamonix are joined by the motorway up the Arve valley. Low-cost coaches and the airport shuttles run the route in about an hour and a half to two hours, and some leave from Geneva Airport rather than the city centre. For a day trip, the tour coaches are easier: they leave central Geneva in the morning, wait for you in Chamonix and bring you back in the evening, and some include the mountain. The return coach above is the transport alone; Keytours’ glass-roof coach tour adds a guide.

By train: no direct line

There is no direct train from Geneva to Chamonix. The two usual routes both take three hours or more. One goes through France, with the Léman Express to Annemasse and changes towards Saint-Gervais, then the line up to Chamonix. The other stays in Switzerland to Martigny and climbs on the Mont-Blanc Express through Vallorcine. On that second route the Swiss Travel Pass covers only the Swiss section; the French stretch from Vallorcine to Chamonix needs a French ticket. It is a beautiful line, but it is a long day for a return trip.

What it costs once you are there

The coach gets you to Chamonix; the mountain is separate. A return on the Aiguille du Midi cable car costs €83 for an adult and €61 one way, and €70.60 return for children aged 5 to 14; the Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace is €31.50 return, or €49.70 with the gondola, exhibition and ice cave (chamonix.com, checked October 2026). The tours sell these as options, or include them: Swisstours’ Chamonix day with cable car and train has both in the price.

Dates to check in 2026

Every autumn the lifts close for maintenance. In 2026 the Aiguille du Midi is closed from 2 November to 18 December and the Montenvers train from 2 November to 4 December (chamonix.com); the tour listings give similar dates and offer alternatives on those days. Chamonix is in France: carry a passport or an EU identity card and pay in euros.
