Geneva to Zermatt Day Trip
Is there a day trip from Geneva to Zermatt? Yes: a 13-hour coach day from US$152 (October 2026), or 3 hours or more each way by train via Visp.
Yes, you can do Zermatt as a day trip from Geneva, but it is a long one: about 13 hours on a coach tour, or more than three hours each way by train with a change at Visp. The coach day is Keytours’ Geneva: Zermatt Day Trip & Matterhorn, with free time in the car-free village and the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car as an option. It is from US$152 a person (checked October 2026) and rated 4.8 out of 5 from 141 reviews.

Is there a direct train to Zermatt?
Not from Geneva. Zermatt is car-free and sits at the end of a narrow-gauge mountain line, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, which starts at Visp in the Rhône valley. From Geneva you take an SBB train along Lake Geneva and up the Rhône to Visp, then change for Zermatt; the whole journey takes about three hours to three and three-quarter hours. Coaches cannot drive into Zermatt either: the tour stops at Täsch, and a shuttle takes you the last few kilometres.
Is the train from Geneva to Zermatt scenic?
Yes, all the way. The first hour runs along Lake Geneva past Lausanne and the Lavaux vineyards, then the line follows the Rhône valley between high mountains, and the last hour from Visp climbs a steep, narrow valley to Zermatt. The coach tour follows much the same route by road.
What the train costs
SBB prices the ticket by day and time, and Supersaver fares bought early are cheaper than the full fare, so check sbb.ch for your date; the ticket from Geneva covers both trains. The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car is separate, from about CHF 95 to 120 for an adult return depending on the season (matterhornparadise.ch and zermatt.swiss, checked October 2026). The coach tour puts the trip, the shuttle and free time in one booking, and sells the cable car as an option you can also upgrade to on the day.
How long to spend in Zermatt
On a day trip you get a few hours: enough for the village, the Matterhorn views from the old town and either the Glacier Paradise cable car or a long lunch. Guests on the tour this year call it a full day and say the cable car to 3,883 metres was worth the time and the money, with the Matterhorn in view; one had time for a beer and local snacks before the coach. If you want to hike or ski, stay a night: Zermatt rewards two or three days.
Who should skip it
The day is not for wheelchair users, people with heart problems or altitude sickness, and children under three are not allowed on the cable car. If 13 hours is too long, the Matterhorn is not the only mountain day from Geneva: Chamonix and Mont Blanc are an hour and a half away, as the Chamonix day trip page shows.
