The Guide

What the Gruyères Day Is Like, and When to Take the Train Version

It is a food day as much as a sightseeing day: plan to eat chocolate in the morning and cheese at lunch.

A Gruyères day trip from Geneva is a food day in the Fribourg hills: a chocolate factory in the morning, a cheese dairy before lunch, and free time in the medieval village of Gruyères on its hill. The one this page puts first runs all year: Keytours’ From Geneva: Gruyères Tour with Cheese & Chocolate Factories, with a driver-guide, the Maison Cailler chocolate factory in Broc with a tasting and La Maison du Gruyère cheese dairy. It is from US$189 a person (checked October 2026) and rated 4.5 out of 5 from 197 reviews.

What the day is like

The coach leaves Place Dorcière and takes about two hours to Broc. The first stop is the Maison Cailler chocolate factory, for about an hour and a half: the history of chocolate and of the factory, then a tasting. Next is La Maison du Gruyère, the show dairy in Pringy below the village, for about 45 minutes; you can watch the cheesemakers at work. The last hour is yours in Gruyères itself, a single cobbled street of old houses climbing to the castle. Food is not included, so most guests eat in the village. Recent guests praise the factories and their driver-guides by name, and one family travelling with two teenagers called the day amazing.

The castle, and what it costs

The Château de Gruyères is at the top of the village and is not included in the tour. Entry is CHF 13 for an adult, CHF 9 for seniors and students, CHF 5 for children aged 6 to 15, or CHF 29 for a family (chateau-gruyeres.ch, checked October 2026). From 1 November to 31 March it opens daily from 10:00 to 17:00, with the last entry 45 minutes before closing. With only an hour in the village, choose the castle or a long lunch, not both.

If you hold a Swiss Travel Pass, Maison Cailler and La Maison du Gruyère are free with it on a visit of your own; swisstravelpassunlimited.com explains what else the pass covers.

The summer version, with the panoramic train

From May to October, Keytours runs a longer Gruyères tour with fondue and the GoldenPass train: the same two factories, a fondue lunch at La Maison du Gruyère, free time in the village, then the GoldenPass panoramic train from Montbovon down towards Montreux before the coach back. It is rated 4.7 and costs more, at US$280 a person, because the lunch and the train are included.

Practical points

The tour is not suitable for wheelchair users, and pets are not allowed on the coach. Wear shoes for cobbles: the village street is steep in places. The day ends back at Place Dorcière in the evening, about an hour and a half from Gruyères.

"Very interesting tour at a pleasant pace – 2 factory visits, one for chocolate and the other for Gruyère cheese, followed by free time and a meal break in the quaint but touristy village of Gruyère."

Daniel France

"Great day trip…small group..excellent glass topped bus….great guide, Aristotle….the trip drives through Lavaux & Verne and reaches Gruyere. The Callier chocolate factory tour was amazing with unlimited chocolates for tasting & so was the Gruyere cheese factory. Nothing was rushed or strenuous. We had 2+ hours at the Gruyere town, to go to castle/museums, have lunch. Fondue is recommended. All-in-all a perfect day"
