Montreux Day Trip From Geneva

Is Montreux worth a day trip from Geneva? Yes: Chillon Castle, the Lavaux vineyards and Chaplin's World, 1 h 15 by train, or a tour from US$196 (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

Yes, Montreux is worth a day from Geneva: it is about an hour and a quarter away by direct train, and the day combines Chillon Castle on its rock in the lake, the UNESCO-listed Lavaux vineyards and the Charlie Chaplin museum above Vevey. Doing all three by train takes planning; Keytours’ Geneva: Montreux, Chaplin's World, Chillon Castle & Apéritif does them in one day with the entries included, from US$196 a person (checked October 2026), rated 4.6 from 171 reviews.

What the day covers

The tour starts at Chaplin’s World in Corsier-sur-Vevey, the museum in the house where Charlie Chaplin spent the last part of his life, with its film-set studio, and about two hours inside. Next is a break in the Lavaux vineyards with a glass of wine or juice, a short look at Vevey, then Chillon Castle for an hour and free time in Montreux. Guests this summer and autumn praise their driver-guides, the picnic spot in the vines and the Chaplin museum. Lunch is not included, and the version with an old steam boat runs only from June to September.

Chillon and Lavaux

Chillon Castle stands on a rock at the water’s edge just past Montreux, with medieval halls, towers and dungeons to walk through. On your own, entry is CHF 15 for an adult and CHF 7 for a child, and from November to February it opens from 10:00 to 17:00, last admission 16:00 (chillon.ch, checked October 2026). The Lavaux terraces climb above the lake for about 30 kilometres from the edge of Lausanne towards Chillon, and have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007. A regional train between Vevey and Puidoux-Chexbres crosses them in twelve minutes.

Is the train from Geneva to Montreux scenic?

Yes, especially after Lausanne, where the line runs along the shore below the Lavaux terraces with the French Alps across the water; heading east, sit on the right for the lake. Direct trains run through the day and take about an hour and a quarter; check sbb.ch for times.

Geneva or Montreux?

They are different trips. Geneva is a city, with the old town, the lake front and the international quarter. Montreux is a small resort town on the riviera, with a lakeside promenade, palm trees in its mild climate and the castle down the road. Stay in Geneva and visit Montreux for the day; or, if you want the mountains, combine the riviera with snow on Swisstours’ Glacier 3000 day, which stops in Montreux on the way back.
